The Beauty of Destruction

With the current situation in Japan, questions of nuclear power are headliners all over the world. Memories of old tragedies certainly gets awoken and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine is obviously one of them.

In 1986 a fire at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant released large amount of radioactive materials into the atmosphere and the town of Pripyat nearby had to be evacuated within 36 hours. People had to leave most of their belongings, sometimes even pets in the stress of getting out in time. The meltdown was a disaster and a lot of people suffered from terrible illnesses after being exposed to the radioactivity. Generations after the disaster still live with radiation-related illnesses.

This video was filmed in 2009 around the Chernobyl area and was nominated for three UK Music Video Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Telecine. The song This Momentary by the british alternative dance/dream pop group Delphic, was released in late August 2009 through Kitsuné.

The song and the video is really moving, and I find these kind of places fascinating. It's beautiful, sad and intriguing at the same time.
